Framed Vintage Hmong Embroidered Silk TTL40

From Sapa in the mountains of northern Vietnam, this vintage textile was embroidered with silk over a cotton backing and was once traditionally worn as the collar of a jacket by the Hmong people. The Hmong are famed for the embroidery skills of the women and the silversmith skills of the men. The motif featured is typical of Hmong designs and symbolizes good luck and prosperity. It has been framed with card and glass.

The Hmong are a colorful hill tribe people found living throughout Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Burma and Yunnan. The embroidery skills of Hmong women are well known and respected throughout the region and by textile collectors in the west. The Four Seasons Resort in Chiang Mai has a similar piece framed and on display.
