Vintage Silk Wall Hanging / Runner STL03

$725.00

This remarkable traditional vintage silk is 50-70 years old. Hand woven on a wooden loom over several weeks, it is an excellent example of the art of traditional silk weaving in Laos. It lends itself to being used as a wall hanging or a table / bed runner. Predominantly in red and gold, the ends are adorned in an extensive complex supplementary weft design using ancient motifs.

The condition of this silk textile is very good – free of stains, holes or excessive wear. There is a small degree of stretching common to older pieces that were worn as shawls, and the silk fibres show expected wear in the form of ‘brushing’ of the silk threads. Silk textiles of this caliber were treasured by the former owner and so were cared for very well. Vintage silk textiles from Laos of this quality are very hard to come by nowadays.

Sam Neua, in the remote northern province of Houaphan, is the original home of silk weaving in Laos. Sam Neua weavers are renowned for their mastery and creativity, taking silk weaving to a level where it is considered an art form.

The bamboo hanger is not included, but can be purchased here – bamboo silk hanger.
