Vintage Silk Art Textile Laos STL19


This impressive vintage silk textile is 30-40 years old and was created on a traditional wooden loom by a master weaver from Sam Neau taking several weeks to complete. A series of complex old style motifs, skillfully executed decorate the piece including the frog motif symbolizing rain, diamonds representing eyes to ward off evil spirits, elephants and birds. It ends in silk tassels in the colors of the motifs and is in excellent condition.

Sam Neua, in the remote northern province of Houaphan, is the original home of silk weaving in Laos. Sam Neua weavers are renowned for their mastery and creativity, taking silk weaving to a level where it is considered an art form.
