From Bagan, (Pagan), this is an offering vessel, or ‘hsun ok’, and is constructed from coiled bamboo and wood. After natural black lacquer, several layers of red lacquer, created by mixing cinnabar with natural black lacquer, were applied with long drying sessions in-between. This particular hsun-ok has a very attractive deep auburn tone.
On the lower section, a lattice of thin wooden balusters, each intricately carved and then lacquered, encircles the waist of the pedestal. In the past, hsun-ok holding gifts were carried proudly on the heads of Burmese women on the way to the Buddhist temple as an act of merit. This is one of the best examples of late 19th – early 20th century hsun-ok we have be able to offer to date.
