Decorated Bronze Betel Lime Box, 19thC Afghanistan EUO141

$325.00

From Afghanistan, this exotic antique bronze container was used for keeping lime, which was added to betel nut and spices, then chewed, providing a mild intoxication. This was a popular habit throughout much of Asia as well as the parts of the Middle East and remains so today in many places. Attractive decoration is mirrored on both sides of the orb. The workmanship is excellent; now worn smooth in places from over a century of regular handling.

Shipping by registered airmail with online tracking is included in the price.
