Jumbo Antique Bronze Elephant Bell Burma EBB51

This is the largest and most worn antique bronze elephant bell we have come across. Elephant bells approaching this size are extremely rare and would have been worn by a large tusker – bull elephant. The bell has a beautiful, smooth, even patina and in places the decoration has nearly been rubbed away by the elephant’s skin.

Spherical elephant bells from Burma are known as chu, and were cast in bronze and then decorated with traditional motifs and the maker’s name in Burmese characters. This bell also bears a bird motif as illustrated in one of the photos.

A metal ball rolls around inside the bell and sounds against the bell wall with pleasant gentle notes. The bell is in excellent condition, with only one small crack at the mouth on one side. The bell is hung from a custom built stand.
