A superb pair of original Mughal paintings inlaid with semi-precious stones depicting Shah Jahan, the great 17thC Mughal emperor and his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, for whom the incredible Taj Mahal was constructed as a tomb following her premature death.

Mughal painting emerged from the tradition of miniature painting in Persia during the 16th century, with subsequent Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain influences.

These portraits were created using watercolors and a squirrel hair brush allowing for remarkable detail. There is a wide spectrum in the quality of Mughal paintings and this pair is superior to the vast majority. Polished gemstones have been used to adorn the flamboyant jewelry and costumes.
