Hmong Silver Earrings Laos ETJ171

These antique tribal silver earrings are from a Hmong village in northern Vietnam. They are made from solid high grade silver formed into a distinctly Hmong design, incised with a simple motif. Handed down through generations, they date to the late 19th century. They have a smooth patina, with the motif worn to the point of vanishing in places.

The Hmong are a colourful hill tribe people whose homeland is in the mountainous regions of southern China. Hmong living in Vietnam number around 1,000,000 and are found mostly in the mountainous regions along the northern borders.

The Hmong are divided into four main sub-groups; the White Hmong, Striped Hmong, Red and Black Hmong. They are renowned for their enviable silversmith skills and unique designs.
